ULC Programmes and Schedule

Academic assessments may be recommended when a student is making slower than expected progress despite appropriate classroom support and intervention. These assessments are designed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of a student’s learning profile, including their strengths, areas of difficulty, and underlying learning needs.

There are no labels attached to these assessments. Rather, they help educators gain a clearer understanding of the student’s overall academic abilities and learning processes, enabling more targeted and effective support. Assessment outcomes inform intervention planning, classroom accommodations, and the development of appropriate learning goals to help the student access the curriculum and achieve success.

Assessments are conducted on a one-to-one basis and typically take approximately two hours to complete. The assessment process is designed to be supportive and student-centred, allowing the assessor to gather a detailed picture of the student’s learning profile across a range of areas.

An assessment may include:

1.) WIAT-III UK Teacher Assessment

To assess attainment in key academic areas, including reading, spelling and written language.

2.) GL Dyslexia Screener

To identify indicators associated with dyslexic-type learning difficulties and literacy-related processing skills.

3.) Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning Assessments

To explore cognitive strengths, problem-solving skills, and reasoning abilities.

4.) Free Writing Sample

To assess written expression, spelling, grammar, organisation of ideas, and overall writing development.

5.) Mathematics Assessment for Learning and Teaching (MaLT)

To evaluate mathematical understanding, concepts, and application skills.

Our Maths programme helps children build strong foundations in place value, problem-solving, and reasoning. Lessons are carefully structured using a step-by-step (scaffolded) approach, so new concepts are introduced in small, manageable steps. We use visual models, hands-on resources, and practical examples to make abstract ideas easier to understand. This helps children grow in confidence, accuracy, and independence when working with mathematical concepts.

Our English sessions focus on developing reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and comprehension skills. We support learners through a multisensory and metacognitive approach, combining visual prompts, discussion, and structured writing frames. Children are encouraged to express their ideas clearly while building vocabulary and sentence structure. Lessons are designed to strengthen both understanding and creativity, helping children become more confident learners.

Our EAL sessions are designed for children who are developing English as an additional language. We focus on building everyday vocabulary, sentence structure, and communication skills in a supportive environment. Teaching is highly visual and interactive, using images, gestures, repetition, and modelling to reinforce understanding. This helps children feel more confident in both classroom learning and social interaction.

Our Homework Club provides a calm, structured space where children can complete their school homework with support when needed. Staff help clarify instructions, guide understanding, and encourage independence rather than simply giving answers. The environment promotes good study habits, organisation, and responsibility, ensuring children feel confident managing their workload.

This Getting Ready for School programme is designed to support early learning and independence skills. It helps children build confidence across key areas such as early literacy and numeracy, fine and gross motor development, self-care, and social-emotional readiness. From writing their name and using a pencil correctly, tidying up, and interacting with others. The programme will support key foundation skills such as counting, recognising numbers and colours, singing rhymes, and following instructions.

The programme promotes consistency, encourages independence, and helps parents and educators identify next steps in a positive and supportive way.

Phonics and phonological awareness are key building blocks for early reading and spelling. Phonological awareness develops children’s ability to hear and work with sounds in spoken language, such as rhymes, syllables, and individual sounds. Phonics builds on this by teaching how those sounds link to letters, helping children to read and spell words accurately.

At our centre, both skills are taught through a structured, multisensory approach using engaging, hands-on activities that develop strong listening, reading, and spelling foundations. This ensures children become confident, fluent readers with a secure understanding of how language works.
